Looking for Magic: Cinderella’s Golden Coach…From a Guys Perspective

Last week, we were at Walt Disney World for Princess Half Marathon Weekend.  During our visit, we had the opportunity to catch the “sneak  peek” of the live-action feature, Cinderella, and get up-close-and-personal with the original Golden Coach from the film.  Rather than present this post from the fairy tale perspective, we thought it might be unique to talk about the coach from a guy (Sean’s) perspective.

While many including myself see movie props as nonfunctional and rough, Cinderella’s Golden Coach, now on display at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, appears to be neither of those.  This movie prop is one for the books!
First and foremost, the carriage is large, very ornate, and looks like the real thing. From the rubber clad wheels to the disc brakes, Cinderella’s Golden Coach was built to function, with details that makes this coach more than just a  movie prop:
  • The brake’s master cylinder in front of the driver’s seat is an indicator of the weight of the coach.  It’s 10 feet tall, 17 feet in length, and weighs nearly two tons!
  • The coache’s cabin is suspended by leather straps and curved leaf springs.  We saw them in action when two “Princesses” placed their feet on the steps.  The coach rocked softly–until a cast member politely asked the princesses to please not touch the coach.

Lastly, the detail on the Golden Coach is outstanding!  Leave it to the Walt Disney Imagineers to design and construct this awesome vehicle.
